Getting to Know Mr. Giangiacomo Ollandini: A Conversation with Your Urologist
Absolutely. I'm a Consultant Urological Surgeon specialising in general urology, andrology, sexual medicine, and infertility. This includes managing conditions like Lower Urinary Tract Symptoms (LUTS), benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), urinary tract infections (UTIs), urinary stones, and cancers of the bladder, testicles, and prostate. I perform a variety of procedures, from endoscopies to complex surgeries, to address most aspects of urological well-being.
Within the private sector, I practice at several esteemed locations, including Chelsea and Westminster Hospital Private Care, Nuffield Health Highgate Hospital, The Circle Saxon Clinic in Milton Keynes, and 10 Harley Street Clinic. My focus is on providing compassionate, personalized care to each of my patients.
I was born and raised in the beautiful coastal city of Trieste, Italy. Growing up by the sea instilled in me a deep appreciation for nature and the interconnectedness of all life. My passion for urology is, in many ways, a family tradition. My uncle, Professor V. Ricci-Barbini, was a full professor of urology and an incredibly compassionate clinician. He was not just a family member but also a mentor and a role model who inspired me to follow in his footsteps.
My medical journey began at the University of Trieste, where I had the privilege of training under esteemed professors like Belgrano and Trombetta. Their guidance and dedication to the field profoundly shaped my approach to medicine. I've always been fascinated by the power of communication in healing, and I believe that understanding my patients' stories is just as important as diagnosing their conditions.
After completing my specialization in urology with first-class honors in Verona, Italy, and earning a Master's in Andrological Surgery and Gender Disorder Surgery, I sought opportunities to broaden my horizons. My passion for traveling and experiencing different cultures led me to the UK, where I was drawn by the country's rich medical history and the opportunity to work in diverse, multicultural environments.
Since moving to the UK, I've held positions at renowned hospitals, including King's College Hospital, Milton Keynes University Hospital, and Chelsea and Westminster Hospital. Working in these settings has allowed me to collaborate with a wide range of professionals and to continue growing both personally and professionally.
That's a great question and a bit of a historical quirk unique to the UK. In British medical tradition, surgeons are referred to as "Mr." rather than "Dr." This practice dates back to the Middle Ages when barbers and surgeons were not considered to hold medical degrees like physicians, who were university-educated and called "Dr." Over time, surgeons became highly trained professionals, but the title "Mr." remained as a nod to this history. So, while I am fully qualified with medical degrees, the title "Mr." signifies my role as a surgeon within the UK system.
My approach is holistic and patient-centered. Coming from a background that values the power of communication, I prioritize building strong, trusting relationships with my patients. I strive to ensure that they feel heard, understood, and supported throughout their healthcare journey. This means addressing not only their physical health but also considering their emotional and psychological well-being.
I believe that every patient is unique, and I tailor my treatment plans to reflect their individual needs and circumstances. Whether it's a common urological issue or a complex condition, my goal is to provide compassionate care that empowers my patients.
Technology is integral to modern medicine, and I embrace it fully to enhance patient care. I utilize state-of-the-art diagnostic tools and surgical equipment to provide the most effective treatments. Electronic patient records, secure communication platforms, and telemedicine services allow me to maintain continuity of care, which is especially important for patients who travel or have busy schedules.
At the same time, I believe technology should complement, not replace, the human touch. It's a tool that enables me to provide better care but doesn't diminish the importance of face-to-face interactions and personal connections with my patients.
Medicine is always advancing, and staying at the forefront is essential. I'm actively involved in medical research and regularly contribute to international journals and conferences. Being part of a multidisciplinary team allows me to collaborate with experts in various fields, enriching my own practice.
I also serve as an educational supervisor and have been an andrology tutor in the subspecialty school of reproductive medicine. Teaching keeps me engaged with the latest developments and allows me to give back by mentoring the next generation of medical professionals.
Collaboration is at the heart of comprehensive patient care. I work closely with physiotherapists, radiologists, pain specialists, endocrinologists, plastic surgeons, gynecologists, reproductive specialists, and psychosexual counselors. This team approach ensures that all aspects of a patient's health are considered, and we can provide holistic treatment plans that address physical symptoms as well as emotional and psychological needs.
I offer a range of services for both insured and self-funded private patients across several locations:
Chelsea and Westminster Hospital Private Care: Here, I provide outpatient consultations, outpatient procedures, and inpatient surgeries, welcoming both national and international patients.
Nuffield Health Highgate Hospital: Patients can access comprehensive urological services, including consultations and surgeries.
The Circle Saxon Clinic in Milton Keynes: I offer the same high standard of care with the convenience of a location outside London.
10 Harley Street Clinic: At this prestigious address, I provide outpatient consultations in a comfortable and private setting.
Regardless of the location, my focus remains on delivering personalized, expert care tailored to each patient's needs.
Outside of medicine, I have a deep connection with the sea and nature, rooted in my upbringing in Trieste. I find peace and inspiration in natural settings—whether it's sailing, hiking, or simply spending time outdoors. Traveling is another passion of mine; it allows me to experience different cultures and perspectives, which I believe enriches my practice and personal life.
I also have a profound appreciation for the power of communication. Whether it's learning new languages, engaging in meaningful conversations, or exploring different forms of expression, I believe that effective communication is key to understanding and connection.
The most rewarding aspect is making a positive impact on my patients' lives. Seeing someone regain their health, confidence, and quality of life is incredibly fulfilling. It's a privilege to support patients through their challenges and to witness their resilience and recovery. Every patient teaches me something new, and I am grateful for the trust they place in me.
Perhaps just a closing thought on the importance of personalized care. Medicine is not just about treating diseases; it's about treating people. I strive to bring empathy, respect, and understanding to every patient interaction. My journey—from the shores of Trieste to the vibrant medical community in the UK—has taught me that the best outcomes are achieved when patients feel truly cared for, both medically and personally.
