As a surgeon, I see patients every day that tell me: "I wish I had come to see you six months ago." Today I'm going to give you three red flags in urology that you can't miss.
No. 1: blood in the urine. We call it haematuria. It can be visible, when you see red blood in your pee, or it can be non-visible, when it is your doctor that sees it with a microscope or a test. Even if you have it only once, if it goes away by itself, if you don't feel any pain, please get checked. Go to your GP and get checked. Especially the painless blood in the urine is the one that we urologists worry about the most.
No. 2: a lump in the testicle. Especially if you are between 15 and 35 years of age and you find that there is a hard lump in your testicle, don't wait a single second. Go and get checked. With 5 minutes of an ultrasound you can save your life, and you can be reassured if it is nothing.
No. 3: a sudden change. If all of a sudden you can't get an erection, you need to pee five times in a night, you are unable to hold your urine well: sudden is the key.
